Our Story

In the fall of 2010, Reverend Dr. Randy B. Kelley, Pastor of the Goodsell United Methodist Church, convened a group of Christian-centered individuals to learn about Juneteenth and its illustrious history. This ad hoc group consulted former Texas congressman Albert Ely Edwards, an American politician and advocate for a national Juneteenth holiday, on how Juneteenth is recognized and celebrated in the United States. At that time, 39 states and the District of Columbia observed Juneteenth National Freedom Day. By 2011, with a focus on education, the Greater Valley Juneteenth Committee (GVJC) produced its’ first series of Juneteenth events: essay and poster contests for school-aged youth, Gee’s Bend quilt display at Bradshaw Library, a community Juneteenth Festival, and a Juneteenth banquet. Rev. Dr. C. T. Vivian, a living legend of the 60’s Civil Rights Movement and freedom bus rider, was the banquet’s keynote speaker.

The GVJC was chaired by Carmen McCoy and advised by Dr. Kelley and Trudye Morgan Johnson.   The Greater Valley Juneteenth Committee is a unique entity. It is a non-profit that is managed and led by volunteers. Resources to support Juneteenth events are raised through sweat equity, solicitations, grants, and donations. Activities are mostly free, family-focused , and open to the public. The GVJC works in partnership with the local cities, churches, businesses, and

community groups to educate themselves about freedom, culture, and equality for all people, and especially the accomplishments of African Americans.

In June 2021, Juneteenth became a federal holiday in the United States, and it is also celebrated as a local holiday in the greater Valley area. Many of the initial Juneteenth events are provided annually. Other programs and activities have included the Chili Cook-off, Gospel Fest, Juneteenth Youth Scavenger Hunt, Summer Sounds, Lampbearers, Farmer’s Market, and fireworks. Volunteers are welcomed.
